UMCH/PROSTITUTION ROUND TABLE AWARDED LIBERTY BELL AWARD

The Liberty Bell Award honors a non-lawyer or non-profit organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cause of justice or to advancing public awareness of the Constitution and our legal system.

The 2008 Liberty Bell Award is presented to the Prostitution Round Table (PRT), which is comprised of over 30 organizations. In 2000, the Nokomis Foundation convened the PRT, drawing on a wide range of community leaders and organizations, including the police department, social service agencies, and religious groups.

The PRT has developed numerous ongoing programs and conducted substantial educational outreach. The PRT has worked with social workers and police to connect prostituted women to community programs. Degagé Ministries has opened its doors to meet the largest single need identified through the PRT's work: a safe place for prostituted women to come during the hours that traditional social services are not available. The PRT's efforts to promote understanding and develop programs have improved relationships with the police, the courts, and social service systems to more effectively reduce crime and to create opportunity and equity for marginalized members of our community.
